Windsor and Stonehenge

Windsor Castle. Originally built by King William the Conqueror. Today the castle is an official residence of Her Majesty the Queen. Visit the magnificent State Apartments.
Stonehenge. Mystical and awe-inspiring stone circle. One of the most well-known prehistoric monuments in the world.

Cambridge and Ely or Audley End

Cambridge. One of the great English universities, which developed from 12thc. Visit the handsome college buildings and go punting on the River Cam.
Audley End. Built by the Earl of Suffolk to entertain King James I, 17thc. A recently restored organic garden.
Ely. A small city with a magnificent cathedral, which has an unusual central octagon. Oliver Cromwell's home town.

Canterbury and Dover

Canterbury. The town where St. Augustine founded English Christianity in 560 AD and Thomas Becket was killed in 1170. The cathedral is the mother church of the Anglican religion, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Dover. England's main gateway to the continent, just 17 miles from France.
Visit the Norman Dover Castle with a Roman lighthouse. Explore the World War II tunnels, which housed an underground hospital and the planning centre for the Dunkirk evacuation.

Cotswolds

The area of England renowned for its charming villages, thatched cottages, pretty gardens and glorious scenery. Discover some of the quaint villages with strange names, e.g. Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh, Chipping Campden and Bourton-on-the-Water. A good chance to do some antique shopping.

Winchester and Broadlands

Winchester. Visit the cathedral which was founded in 1079 and where Jane Austen is buried.
Broadlands. An elegant Palladian mansion, home of the late Lord Mountbatten. It was also the country residence of the Victorian Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston.

Constable Country

East Bergholt, where John Constable was born in 1776.
Dedham, where John Constable was educated at the local grammar school. Some local people sailed on the "Mayflower".
Flatford, a tiny hamlet made famous by the artist. The "Hay Wain" was painted here.

Salisbury and Stonehenge

Salisbury. The world famous cathedral, with its soaring spire, is set within a charming Close. It is possibly the finest medieval building in Britain. An original Magna Carta is preserved in the Chapter House.
Stonehenge. Mystical and awe-inspiring stone circle. One of the most well-known prehistoric monuments in the world.

Cotswold Gardens

Hidcote Manor. Famous English garden designed by Lawrence Johnston. A series of small gardens.
Bourton House. 3 acre garden with interesting borders and plantings. Ideas for pots.
Sudeley Castle. Award winning gardens famous for topiary and old roses.
Barnsley House. Rosemary Verey's 4 acre garden.
Painswick Rococo Garden. A unique 18thc. garden restoration. Woodland walks and formal vistas.
Misarden Park. Noted for its large double herbaceous border in summer.
Sezincote. Exotic oriental water garden by Repton and Daniell. Indian style house.
Kiftsgate Court. Magnificently situated garden on the Cotswold escarpment. Unusual shrubs and plants.

Portsmouth

A vast naval base with an Historic Dockyard. Home to Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory and King Henry VIII's ship which sank in the Solent in 1545, the Mary Rose.
Also visit the D-Day museum with the Overlord Tapestry or Charles Dickens birthplace.

Bath. The Roman bathing complex and hot springs are one of the finest ancient monuments in the country. See the beautiful Georgian architecture and visit the Assembly rooms, which Jane Austen knew. A good shopping city.

Wilton House. Still the ancestral home of the Earl of Pembroke. Glorious 17thc. State Apartments, including the famous Single and Double Cube rooms. World class picture collection.

Stratford. Visit the town where William Shakespeare was born and died. See the church where he was christened. Learn all about Shakespearian England. See some of the surrounding villages that he visited.

Longleat House. Magnificent Elizabethan home of the Marquess of Bath. Renowned Safari Park. The "World's Longest Hedge Maze".

Oxford. Famous for its ancient university. Visit the college buildings and go punting on the River Cherwell.

Warwick. Everyone's idea of a castle from battlements to a dungeon. See history almost brought to life with the waxwork figures of the 15thc. Earl of Warwick preparing for battle and the 19thc. Countess of Warwick hosting a Victorian weekend.
